“Flow charts make cooking easy.”

— George Washington

My least favorite part of cooking is constantly losing my place in paragraphs of recipe text. I generally much prefer to learn a sequence of steps by flow chart over written instructions, so I figured I’d take a crack at producing a flow chart format that works well for cooking.

My format considers the following.

  • Ingredients listed inline and with measurement to avoid context switching between ingredient list and instructions

  • Key information visible at a glance

    • Timed steps

    • Steps at temperature (oven or chilled)

    • Vessels

  • Preparation steps next to ingredients to enable easy delegation of prep

  • Verbose notes hidden by default so that they do not distract from the critical tasks

Below is my first attempt at a template (the recipe is not real…) and linked here is an actual guide for sourdough starter and loaf.
